About the Granite Belt Wine Region

Stanthorpe Shire, the heart of Queensland's Granite Belt Wine Region, is located just 2.5 hours south west of Brisbane on the New England Highway route to Sydney.

The region's spectacular landscapes and generally cool, temperate climate ensure that Stanthorpe Shire stands out as a particularly unique area of Queensland.  We even experience the occasional winter snow fall!

The town of Stanthorpe was originally established by tin miners in the 1870's. Diversification into fruit and vegetable growing provided the solid foundation for the growth of the Shire.

Agricultural production remains a strong focus in the Region, with a diverse range of produce grown including apples, pears, table grapes, berries, stonefruit, persimmon, figs, olives and a huge range of vegetables.

Green Apples

The Granite Belt/Stanthorpe Shire produces 37,000 tonnes of apples per year - 10% of the national crop and virtually all of Queensland's Apples!

The fresh produce grown in the Granite Belt is an integral part of the local lifestyle and is an important influence on the gourmet food products produced in the region.

With thanks to a strong Italian community, the Granite Belt is an area which has had a long history of viticulture and winemaking with table grapes.  Since the first Shiraz grapes were planted in 1965, the region has grown fitfully but dramatic growth is envisaged due to the emphasis now being placed on Chardonnay, Semillon, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
